Governing Board
George Green’s School (GGS) Governing Board provides strategic leadership and accountability in the school, working with the Principal to ensure that the school is always improving. We aim to promote high standards of educational achievement and wellbeing; to sustain and promote the schools’ ethos; to ensure that every student has an equality of opportunity and gets the best possible education.
“This is George Green’s School” and it has a long and rich history. Founded in 1828, it has for nearly 200 years, played a pivotal role in the education of the children of the Isle of Dogs. As a voluntary controlled secondary school in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets since 1975, the School is partially funded by the George Green’s School Foundation Trust, which owns the land on which the School is situated and provides financial support for enrichment activities and bursaries.
The Governing Board is made up of 5 Foundation Governors who are also Trustees of the George Green’s School Foundation Trust, 7 Co-opted Governors, 5 Parent Governors, 1 Local Authority Governor, 1 Staff Governor and the Principal.
The Governing Board has three key functions:
- Overseeing the financial performance of the School and making sure its money is well spent
- Holding the Headteacher to account for the educational performance of the School and its pupils
- Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction
Our Vision
Our Vision for the future of GGS is to be an exceptional school at the heart of the community, with strong business links and secure pathways to further education and employment.
Our Approach
The Governing Board supports GGS values of Aspiration, Equality and Excellence. We are passionate about providing our students with an enriching, academically ambitious centre of excellence offering a wealth of opportunities involving creative and cultural capital that prepares young people to be talented, confident and successful global citizens of tomorrow. We do this by setting the strategic direction of the School, in conjunction with the Principal and Senior Leadership Team, creating robust accountability at all levels and ensuring excellent financial management and oversight. We try to engage the best teachers and staff, encourage innovation, reward excellence and provide the best environment to be an inclusive and anti-racism organisation where staff and students feel challenged but comfortable.
Ethos
Our traditional ethos encompasses our approach to behaviour. We believe in hard work and good discipline. Staff and students are expected to attend well, be on time and to do their best. We expect them to be courteous, respectful and polite. We have one very simple rule at GGS – right time, right place, right thing. No Excuses.
