  Key Stage 3 English

  What you will study: Each year group will undertake six units throughout the course of the year, covering a range of topics including Shakespeare, poetry, prose and, creative and non-fiction writing. Throughout KS3, learning and teaching in English will continue to capitalise on the student’s experience and understanding of English and Literacy in primary school, whilst ensuring the level of challenge and variety prepares them for GCSE.

  
  Assessment: Students sit exams in January and June. Each exam requires students to answer a range of multiple choice questions on their prior learning as well as a more detailed extended response about the most recent topic they have studied. Parents will receive feedback in school reports, highlighting where their child sits amongst the year group, and students will receive focused targets to ensure they develop their skills in English.

  Key Stage 4 English

  Exam board: AQA GCSE English Language 8700 and AQA GCSE English Literature 8702

  What you will study: In KS4, students study English Language and English Literature separately, students will examine a range of challenging literature, developing their evaluation, analysis, critical thinking skills, and focusing upon how authors communicate effectively and imaginatively.

  Assessment: Both courses are assessed through two examinations and will be awarded the government designed levels 1-9.

  Maths

  Key Stage 3 Maths

  What you will study: The Mathematics course is taught in ability sets; and develops students’ skills and knowledge of mathematical concepts related to Number, Data Handling, Algebra, Geometry and Measures and Mathematical processes. Functional Maths skills will also be taught where students can apply their knowledge to different real life situations. Through the Maths lessons, students will develop their problem solving and mental skills as well as real life application.

  Assessment: Students will be formally assessed four times over the course each year. From these assessments, results of achievement will be recorded, tracked and communicated to parents in the end of year report, which will give students an average level for the year.

  Key Stage 4 Maths

  What you will study: There are two tiers of entry to GCSE: Foundation (grade 5-1) and Higher (grades 9 to 4). The GCSE Mathematics course is compulsory, and enables students to further develop their skills and understanding of mathematical concepts taught in earlier years and additional topics, including Number, Ratio, Proportion and Rates of Change, Statistics and Probability, Geometry and Measures.

  Assessment: Students will undertake regular assessments within the school year at the end of topics in addition to mock examinations at the end of the school year, in preparation for final examinations at the end of the two year course. Final exams consist of three papers; 1 hour and 30 minutes long, one exam does not allow a calculator

  Key Stage 3 Science

  What you will study: Throughout Key Stage 3, students will study a range of topics, under the scientific concepts: Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Each core area is covered at each stage of KS3, developing students’ knowledge further and introducing units as student’s awareness and understanding evolves.Assessment: Classwork is continually assessed within each lesson, ensuring every student makes progress and closes the learning gap. For more complex tasks, ‘task’ marking is used, allowing teachers to provide opportunities for the student to make progress on their work. At the end of each unit, students will undertake an assessment.

  Key Stage 4 Science

  What you will study: At Key Stage 4, all core areas Biology, Chemistry and Physics are further addressed, regardless of student qualification, however there are options available. 1. Triple Science (GCSE Biology, GCSE Chemistry and GCSE Physics). 2. GCSE Science and GCSE Additional Science.

  Assessment: Students will undertake regular assessments within the school year at the end of topics in addition to final examinations at the end of the two year course. There are two tiers of entry to GCSE: Foundation (grade 5-1) and Higher (grades 9 to 4); both GCSE Science courses are composed of two written exams to assess the quality of knowledge and written communication and a controlled assessment.
