Eco COMMITTEE
Thames21 River Clean

Some of our Eco Committee members were out today volunteering on the Thames foreshore at low tide. Year 7 students worked alongside Year 10 and 12 students. They were using our new Litter Pickers and gloves funded by Duke of Edinburgh Award London.

They were working with Thames 21, a charity committed to celebrating and looking after the Thames and tackling waste and plastic pollution in our rivers.

Eco Committee Thames21 River Clean

The Thames faces sewage pollution, the growing problem of plastic waste, toxic chemicals from roads, invasive plants and the impact of drought and flooding. These dangers don’t just impact the Thames and its wildlife. They threaten us too; our quality of life and our city’s health and prosperity.

Thames 21 are working with volunteers (like our Eco Committee ‘citizen scientists’) to monitor and identify the amount of plastic in the Thames. Our Eco Committee members collected all kinds of plastic litter that had washed up along certain areas of the foreshore. They then sorted it and counted all the different items.

How many plastic straws and sweet packets did we find? (!)

Collecting this kind of data is very important. It shows just how bad the problem is and supports the campaign for better protection of our waterways. It also helps raise awareness of the problem of single use plastics.

If you are interested in joining Eco Committee, there are lots of great volunteering opportunities coming up. Speak to Ms O’Sullivan, Enrichment Team or Mr Halligan, Head of Geography for more info.

Be the change you want to see!
